I swear, every time it rains and I’m on the highway, I get a windshield full of spray from the car in front. Got so bad one time that I couldn’t see shit.

Don’t give a fuck. I want to be able to see out of my windshield when the wipers are on high.

Nissan makes splash guards so incompetent they make no difference...

Better than a semi-trailer spray.

Ya! Screw all these automakers. They are so generous with their cheap plastic inside the vehicles, but as soon as you get outside they turn into Scroog McDuck

But it’s just not a good idea to sit by a semi full-stop.

Do these actually do anything? All mine seem to do is collect mud and salt between a plastic part and a metal body part, resulting in premature rust.
(this isn’t my vehicle but the same model... I’m dreading opening mine up)

One of its functions is to prevent rust. I guess yours aren’t that good. They also cut down spray in wet weather.

Because those are red. If they were black they’d be fine.

They look like poop, I’d rather throw up spray.

So you’d rather be an ass to the people behind you?
Sorry, but I feel very strongly about this. Was on the I5 near Seattle when it started raining hard. Was behind some car that literally covered my windscreen with water, and my wipers couldn’t clear it up even on high. I could have drifted because I couldn’t fucking see.

Because they’re ugly looking and most of the time don’t really do anything.
Plus how close are you to the cars in front of you that your windshield is getting re-covered in spray that fast?!

I don’t tailgate. Y’know, doing 70 on the freeway can move water long distances. I don’t give a shit if some people think they’re ugly, I don’t want to drive blind.
Well-designed splash guards, like the ones on my car, do cut down on spray.

Sorry if I want to be able to see outside while I’m doing highway speeds.

Not that much. A full set of four only reduces about one half MPG.

There is always the option of dropping of further back ya know? Or passing, either works.
TheHondaBro

I pass when I get the opportunity, which isn’t easy when the highway is crowded.
I always stay a safe distance away from the car in front. The cloud of mist still reaches my car and blinds me.

I’m assuming it’s because on many cars they are an option that many people don’t think of. Given they should be free or standard.

They really should be standard. I’m surprised it’s not mandated by the IIHS.

Yeah I took mine off too as they look terrible.
I’ve experienced what you’re complaining about, and if you’re travelling a safe distance behind the other car it shouldn’t affect you.
It doesn’t hurt to be a little further back on high speed roads when it is wet.

I do maintain a safe distance, but the cars generate a cloud of mist that still manages to hit my car, which adds a lot of moisture in addition to the rain.

I agree, I don't understand the people bitching at you. I do not even come close to tailgating in the rain and the spray covers it at highway speeds sometimes. It's fairly ridiculous. It seems there could be something added to a design if the don't want to go the full fledged flap route.

I put them on because they keep my car much cleaner. Also it pot hole patching season and I want to prevent road crap buildup.

Well, the IIHS doesn’t (and cannot) mandate anything. That’d be up to the DOT, but they don’t have such a rule. Fender, mudflap & tire coverage laws are up to each state.
That being said, I’m with most of the commenters here who don’t quite understand your grief. Splash guards or not, vehicles are going to spray water. Use wipers, don’t drive in the rain, or move to a desert.

Get some Rain-X (or similar) on your windshield. Once you do that, the major visibility issue will be the water in the air (as opposed to on the windshield.) I know you think you are following at a safe distance, but that is clearly not true if spray is causing visibility (and thus safety) problems.
